Sponsor and Donation Form Shriver Family Bike Tour for Sarcoma Research (Denmark, July 2003) In April 2002, our then 35-year old daughter Elizabeth (Liddy) was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma (PNET). Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults, accounting for only 1% of all adult cancers. However, it is more prevalent in children (about 20% of all childhood cancers). It is made up of many "subtypes" because it can arise from a variety of tissue structures such as nerves, muscles, joints, bone, and blood vessels. About 10,000 new cases of sarcoma are diagnosed each year and about 5,000 people die each year from sarcoma. Liddy's cancer arose in one of the nerves in her leg. After several months of chemotherapy, the tumor in her thigh was surgically removed. We learned after the surgery that it had metastasized to her lungs. Liddy had post-surgical radiation and chemotherapy. The cancer did not respond to the chemotherapy and more metastases occurred in her lungs. Liddy participated in two Phase I clinical trials, and is now on a treatment regimen based on a recent Phase I clinical trial. Because Ewing's sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults, little is known about how to treat it in adults. Research is desperately needed to help understand and treat this disease. 100% of the money raised will go directly to research on sarcomas. Your donation will be 100% tax deductible. By signing this form and sending in your check you are “sponsoring” one or more Team Sarcoma bike riders, who will be biking along with us specifically to raise funds for sarcoma research. Click here for a PDF copy of the donation form for easy printing. Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 for sarcoma research. Many employers “match” their employee’s contributions to events such as this. Please check with your employer to see if it does and if so follow whatever procedures it requires.
